about

Ah yes, another retrospective. Time to scrape another barnacle from the bottom of the dollar bin, this time from the idyllic perdition known as 2010s San Clemente. Straight edge screamo, Christian alternative, and Pennywise provided the template for a budding Southern California rock band to succeed. Nevertheless, Red Asphalt failed to create a sound remotely close to any of these genres. They even failed to appeal to the Burger Records crowd, despite their underage status.

No one could have guessed that someday and seemingly out of nowhere this blip of a band would endeavor to transcend “blipism,” capitalizing on their mystique after a decade of self-imposed obscurity. Perhaps a rambling bio and professionally designed jacket will heighten their appeal among collectors, spurring sky-high Discogs resale values and prompting the band to ditch Discontinuous Innovation Inc. for a more esteemed suitor like Numero Group or Light In The Attic.

Only time will tell the impact of Red Asphalt’s music on society, which we will explore in the scheduled retrospective-of-the-10-year-retrospective due in 2033. For now, enjoy these 18 indiscriminately genuine artifacts, written and recorded by three friends boomeranging from genre to genre in those bygone enchanted hours between high school and dinnertime.
